Membership in CalUWild Dear California Friends: Many Californians visit the wild areas of Utah, Nevada, California, and the other states of the West to hike, raft, explore rock art, and for the opportunity to simply get away. Many of these wild areas are threatened — by development, oil and gas leasing, off road vehicles. But the threats to these lands of international significance are not insurmountable. There is a citizens organization in California dedicated to helping save the remaining wilderness areas of the West: Californians for Western Wilderness. CalUWild firmly believes that private individuals can make a difference in the management of our public lands — if they possess the tools and information they need to be effective advocates for the lands they love. Our goal is to provide those tools and information. CalUWild has just one membership requirement: each member agrees to take one action a month to help protect our wilderness — a letter to the editor or a member of Congress, or a comment on a management plan prepared by an agency. Dues are voluntary, as listed below. CalUWild collaborates with other environmental groups and collects information from the press and other sources. We then distill this into a useful form and distribute it to our members (mostly via E-mail for speed and cost-effectiveness). We also include information on the most persuasive means of communication. Our Update is sent out at least monthly. CalUWild is developing a network of citizens across the state poised to take effective action whenever it is needed. Our strategy has proven so successful that groups based on our model have sprung up in 19 other states. In order to become even more effective, we need to increase our membership. Therefore, we ask our members to spread the word about the organization, and help recruit new members as well. The Utah Wilderness Bill, America’s Red Rock Wilderness Act, is our major legislative focus right now. In the 107th Congress, it has been introduced in the House by Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), bill number H.R. 1613. Sen Dick Durbin (D-IL) has introduced it in the Senate (S. 786). Go HERE for a list of sponsors and communications targets around this bill. Questions about CalUWild? Ideas for how to promote it and help it expand? Want to assist? Just contact Mike Painter in San Francisco at 415-752-3911 or send an e-mail <info@caluwild.org>. Preserving what remains of America’s wilderness heritage is too important to leave to others. We hope you’ll join us in this exciting endeavor. Thanks! |
